This was a bastard to light. Ok, now that I have that out of the way, lets continue. One afternoon I got the bright idea (pun intended) to do some type of stylized representation of the Solar System and so I present you with my Electric Universe.
I had a crap load of ideas for how I wanted to do this. What you see here wasn’t even part of the list, it just kind of happened. What we have here is the Sun and each Planet. The colors are derived from several Google image searches for the basic color palettes of the planets; I wanted the neon tubes to have a color similarity to the planets to help sell that idea. Jupiter and Saturn are pretty similar in almost all images I saw, so when the ‘neon’ is on, its really similar (and it bugs me). Also, Pluto is not a planet, it is a dwarf planet, therefor it is not represented by a neon tube. Deal with it. You can read up on and watch a video about Pluto here.
I went through a crap ton of renders doing research on lighting and materials to get what i was after and in the end it still isnt what I had in my head, but it’s close and I said screw it. I did a ton of searching and watching various tutorials on lighting and neon but nothing was getting me what i wanted.
The backdrop comes curtesy of the Nasa Hubble Telescope because SCIENCE IS AWESOME! It’s called “Pandora’s Cluster – Abell 2744” and I grabbed it from here.
I have added a new version of the Electric Universe; version 3. With some help from my buddy Mike Batchelor I got the tubes around the neon and some better lighting. Thanks duder!
